中国工程院院士、研究员(教授)、博士生导师。现任中国医学科学院北京协和医学院肿瘤医院病因及癌变研究室主任,癌发生及预防分子机理北京市重点实验室主任;北京协和医学院学术委员会委员,北京大学医学部学术委员会委员,分子肿瘤学国家重点实验室学术委员。 1986 年北京医科大学研究生毕业,医学硕士学位。 1988 年 8 月至 1990 年 6 月在法国国家科学研究中心肿瘤研究所和世界卫生组织国际癌症研究中心 ( IARC ) , 1990 年 7 月至 1994 年 8 月在美国国家毒理学研究中心从事肿瘤基础研究。 1995 到肿瘤医院肿瘤研究所工作。国家杰出青年科学基金获得者 ( 1998年 );卫生部有突出贡献中青年专家(2003 - 2004年度 ) ;国务院颁发政府特殊津贴专家 (2001年) 。2013年当选为中国工程院院士。

学术兼职:中国抗癌协会理事、肿瘤病因专业委员会主任委员,中国吸烟与健康协会理事;国际专业期刊 Int J Cancer、Pharmacogenet Genomics、Biomed Environ Sci,国内专业期刊《中华肿瘤杂志》和《癌症》等编委。研究领域为常见肿瘤发生发展及其遗传易感性的分子机制;肿瘤分子流行病学; 个体化医学。曾承担和正在承担国家 " 973 " 重大基础研究规划、 国家" 863 "高技术项目、 国家自然科学基金重大项目、 国家自然科学基金重点项目、国家杰出青年科学基金项目、国家医学科技攻关项目等重要的科研项目。

主要学术贡献:揭示并阐明我国食管癌、 胰腺癌、 肺癌等肿瘤的易感基因及基因 - 环境交互作用、 遗传变异对肿瘤放化疗疗效及预后的影响。 至 2014 年已发表科学论文 210 余篇, 其中13篇发表在遗传学领域顶级期刊Nature Genetics。论文累计SCI影响因子1100 多分,被引用 9500 多次。参与主编或编写《肿瘤遗传学》、《肿瘤学》、《临床肿瘤学》等专著。研究成果获2006年国家自然科学奖二等奖、2008年国家科技进步奖二等奖和2011年教育部自然科学奖一等奖等。发表在Nature Genetics的文章( Sun et al, Nat Genet 2007; 39: 605 - 613 )被评为 2007 年度中国基础研究十大新闻。已培养肿瘤学毕业博士研究生 20 余名,其中 4 名博士研究生论文被评为 2006 、 2008 、 2009 年和 2013 年全国优秀博士学位论文。
